Meet the Manager report

Here is a summary of the discussions at the "Meet the Manager" event on September 11th, 2008. The event was organised jointly with the Supporters' Club.

Tony Hesketh

Tony very disappointed with the performance to date. The team is a young side adapting to Tony's style of management but are too quiet both on the pitch and in the dressing room. All players are committed to doing well for Chorley FC and feel it strongly when they don't play well.

On Tuesday, we had as many chances as Trafford but didn’t take them. Trafford had composure but we didn't, snatching at the opportunities created by us.

This is Tony’s 25th year in football management, losing is hard and it hurts. The team has been told to improve, more effort required, crosses into the box. They must provide entertainment and goals. Tony is trying to create a team spirit but it takes time.

It is a big stage for some of the players who are more used to crowds of 20 people rather than the 200+ who watch CFC. Tony is extremely appreciative of the support given to the team and the lack of negative comments on Tuesday.

Question

We have no height, we don't pressure, we don't ask for the ball

Answer

We have 5 players over 6 feet and some of lesser height. All players want to do well but need to be noisy. Tony picks the team on good football players not height or stature.

Question

Can the supporters do anything to help Tony create team spirit?

Answer

Just keep turning up and supporting. Tony very appreciative of the good support that turn up at every match especially the away games.

Question

What is happening to Mr Bamba?

Answer

Home Office and Lindsey Hoyle M.P. are now involved. Regulations aimed at Premiership footballers not at players in our league. Hopefully there will be a resolution soon. The F.A. are taking over football work permits in 2009.

Question

We lack experience. Does Tony have a list of players if we had the money?

Answer

He has a long list (and mentioned various names). Tony will only spend money wisely and will not throw money away. If he had £1000 a week more then he would be rather happy. CFC reputation is not good, pitch has improved during the close season but grass is still too long due to the weather.

Comment from audience - lets get 50 more supporters through the gate. That would be a start.

Question

Is he confident in finishing in top 6?

Answer

Absolutely. There is much of a muchness in the league this year and we can do it. Still early days to panic - do that when 21-22 matches have been played! 2-3 wins change everyone but Chorley has not won 3 games on the trot for 6 years.

Training good, everybody turns up but the young team can become a bit scared on the day.
