Spotlight on...
Chorley 0 - 1 Witton Albion
22/08/2000 7:45 PM
Unibond League Division One

A game of two halves. Witton were the more composed in a first half that presented few chances to Chorley. At the other end, Witton made several dangerous crosses into the Chorley box. Following a good one-two between ex-Magpie Simms and a forward, the ball was crossed from the left for Graystone to head in from the right on 19 minutes.

The Cheshire side also seem to have adopted a rapid-attack approach to throw-ins and free kicks, hardly giving the ref time to blow his whistle. One such kick nearly caught the Magpies on the hop, resulting in a free-header, saved at the foot of the post by Marsh stretching to his right. On 40 min, Wallace was injured and replaced by Critchley at full-back. Graystone failed to double his tally when missing an easy chance after good work between Haw and Hennin.

Soon after half-time, Witton, well in control during the first half, surprisingly reverted to all-out defence in the second bringing on centre-back Gleghorn for forward Hennin. Then Chorley stepped up a gear. Corcoran floated a long-range effort just over. Hook shot over. Thomson, Chorley's most dangerous forward, broke Witton's line only to be tripped by Gleghorn when in full flight for goal and only the keeper to beat. By the last-man rule Gleghorn should have been sent off, the ref's yellow adding insult to injury for Thomson on balance was likely to have equalised. The free-kick came to nothing and Witton took the points, despite a final flourish in which Mills just shot over after good work by Critchley.

Some good points however for CFC. In Smyth we at last have a mid-fielder who can unlock defences and with several eager forwards it won't be long before the goals start to come. Thomson in particular was a handful for Witton (and it was something of a surprise when he was substituted after about 70 mins rather than Swailes, subdued for most of the game by Witton's effective back four). Chorley's own back three showed a composure that we could have done with two seasons ago in the Unibond Premier. Substitute Critchley played one of his better games at full-back, concentrating rightly on defence, subduing his more natural attacking style, and thereby leaving fewer gaps.

This time last year, again after only two games, Magpies in Space suggested that Witton would come top (which jointly they did). This season there is nothing to change that viewpoint. At Chorley we have perhaps the best credentials to judge having also played another title favourite Bradford, who seemed strong though less composed. Witton are a highly professional outfit and at times were in complete control, until, for whatever reason they sat back and allowed Chorley room to come forward. Perhaps they were seeing how long they might hold out under sustained pressure. They DID hold out - for the full 90 minutes and few teams in this League will take much from such mean defending. However, defence isn't always the answer - goals at the other end can also count - particularly when it comes to goal-difference in a tight title finish. And on this display, there's no reason why Chorley might not also feature at the finish.
