Witton Albion 1 - 1 Chorley

This was the definitive game of two halves. After dominating the first half without taking the lead, Chorley were decidedly second best after the interval but still came away with a point. Witton remain four points behind us with two games in hand, so the point is worth more to us than to the Cheshire side, who endured their seventh drawn match out of the last ten played in the league.

Chorley started with a bang, and were well on top for the first twenty five minutes. Mason headed a cross just over the goalie, but he didn't get enough on the ball and the keeper was able to turn and gather. On seven minutes, Molyneux turned a corner just wide, then nine minutes later Emmett's free kick from the right went just wide when all it wanted was a touch. At this point it was all Lombard Street to a china orange on Chorley taking the lead, but for all the pressure the Magpies couldn't manage a shot on target. Molyneux and McCartney were taking care of business at the back, and Witton didn't have am attack worthy of the name until the 25th minute, when they won their first corner. They had a good spell for ten minutes, but didn't create any chances.

At the other end, Mills was hovering on the edge of the box to gather the ball from a corner, and his shot went just wide. Then Witton hit the post on the break, and just before half-time Emmett had the first shot on target, but it didn't cause the goalie any problems.

The second half was a totally different story. Witton were on fire and outplayed us in every department, especially midfield. On 53 minutes, they deservedly took the lead. Mike Moseley was played in and a Chorley defender should really have cleared the ball, but missed his kick, leaving Moseley a clear run. Shortly afterwards, Mills had a shot which went just wide, but it was an isolated attack as Witton dictated the play. Even the appearance of Wilkinson in place of Mason failed to change the pattern of play. On the other hand, Dean-Luis Repullo replaced Molyneux in defence, and with his first touch shrugged off a Witton forward and brought the ball into midfield. He went on to have a composed, impressive debut and looks a potential first-teamer.

Bracey, who had had an excellent second half, pulled off the save of the match when he dived to tip over a smashing volley. Then when Butterworth volleyed a Bates cross over on 81 minutes, it seemed Chorley's chance had gone. But with time running out, the Magpies scored the most unlikely goal. A Bates cross from the left wing was punched clear by the goalie, but Varley chipped the ball back in over his head. A group of players jumped for it and the ball landed in the net, with Butterworth adjudged to have got the last touch although it could just as well have been Tulloch. Three minutes of injury time saw Tulloch and Hogan booked, but no further goals, and the luck which we lacked against Radcliffe certainly came our way here.
