Chorley brushed aside an allegedy under-strength Woodley Sports side thanks to the irrepressible combination of Smith and Douglas-Pringle up front. Douglas-Pringle had an absolute stormer on a night when many Magpies impressed, and his link-up with Smith is full of promise and should be full of goals. He had stung the keeper's palms within a minute, although this was probably not connected with the keeper's substitution after 17 minutes. The new goalie's first touch was picking the ball out of the net after Fogarty's free kick was headed onto the bar, probably by Howarth, and Woods was on hand to nod home his first goal for the Magpies on the rebound.
Four minutes later, another Fogarty cross caused chaos. Woodley's number four headed a clearance against another defender, and the ball fell kindly for Douglas-Pringle, who lashed it home. It was all Chorley at this stage, with Smith running tirelessly and winning a lot of the ball. He had a few chances created for him by Douglas-Pringle but was either denied by the goalie or missed the target. Nonetheless, his willingness to shoot was a refreshing change. The third goal was a beauty again, although a solo effort this time. A poor clearance from Woodley's number four fell to Douglas-Pringle on the edge of the box. He had his back to goal, and three men were marking him, so he ran across them and put the ball in the bottom corner. "Once you pop, you just can't stop", as someone behind the goal remarked. Woodley pulled one back with a soft-looking goal at the near post from a corner, but Smith really should have sealed it for Chorley when Douglas-Pringle burst down the right and put in an inch-perfect cross. However the finish was too close to the goalie.
Woodley had a bit of a spell after half-time, mustering a shot on target which Gillies gathered easily. Smith had Chorley's first effort when his 25-yard dipping shot was tipped over, then came another moment of magic from Douglas-Pringle. He received the ball with his back to goal and two men marking him, spun and ran between them, then nudged the ball past the keeper into the bottom corner for a first-rate hat-trick. Soon after, he limped off to a rousing ovation, following Vermiglio and Thompson as victims of Woodley's rough-house tactics. Callaghan was also clattered on the edge of the box, but since all the subs were used he played on up front, with Smith switching to the back. That didn't stop Smith from getting the goal he deserved, when a move begin by Eatock, who interchanged passes with Horrocks a couple of times, saw the ball end up with Smith who hammered it through the goalie's legs. Horrocks missed two late chances, one created by Fogarty's vision, the other by an audacious Eatock flick, but no matter, 5-1 was quite convincing enough.
Douglas-Pringle looked to have it all on this evidence. He combines Wilkinson's ability to hold the ball up and distribute with the pace of Horrocks and the finishing of Queeley at his most deadly. He also has the power to hold off defenders, can turn on a sixpence and has impressive speed of thought. Fogarty had a notable game on the right wing (his defensive duties in the 3-5-2 were negligible), and Borland once again impressed in the middle. There was only one possible choice for man-of-the-match tonight though.
